WHERE: 21-25 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PB

PRICE RANGE: Afternoon Tea £19.75 per person, Champagne Afternoon Tea £25 per person, Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea £27.50

The newly introduced Afternoon Tea menu at Edinburgh’s The Printing Press has taken the traditional ritual and brought it right up to date. The plush decor, with glamorous chandeliers and jewel-toned velvet touches, makes it a beautiful environment for a special event or simply to enjoy an afternoon of luxury in, especially when enjoyed with a glass of champagne. Their Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea is a great way to spoil mum, with it’s inclusion of a glass of Champagne Lanson Rosé and a little box of handmade chocolates for her – the stress-free way to gift!

Guests begin with a trio of small savoury dishes, impeccably presented with a modern twist. The handpicked white crab with avocado is particularly delicious, it’s light and fresh flavours a pleasant and unusual appetiser. The extensive list of fine teas gives exciting options to choose from, and the well informed staff are extremely helpful in guiding you in your decision, while coffees and other hot drinks are still available for those who prefer. I tried the Sri Lankan Lemongrass, which was surprisingly fresh and delicately sweet – even for someone as sweet-toothed as I am! It paired beautifully with the subtle flavour of the crab.

The classic three-tiered cake stand honours tradition, with an array of finger sandwiches, scones and individual, intricately presented sweets; however, head chef Colin Fleming adds his own exciting twists, with the addition of duck egg and their own house smoked salmon in the finger sandwiches. The value of homemade is obvious at The Printing Press, with not only their airy scones, but their rich and sticky raspberry jam being made in house as well. This attention to detail can also be seen through their careful use of local produce to honour their Scottish roots, with the inclusion of Dundee marmalade, heather honey and whisky in their selection of sweet treats. The bite-sized Lemon Meringue Pie included in this selection is one to note in particular, with it’s wonderfully smooth, tangy curd coupled with tiny peaks of golden meringue.

Aside, from the full Afternoon Tea experiences, which can be with or without champagne, they also offer a Children’s Afternoon Tea for £13.75 – a great way to include someone small in the festivities or treat the tiny tea jenny in your life!
